The Magic Good of God

There is a magic in the world of men.
It is the magic good of God--
the miracle of atom hydrogen,
the mystery of the goldenrod.

That life would happen from a great big bang,
about one in a trillion chances,
that I am me, not some orangoutang,
by unknown marvelous circumstances.

Whence comes the magic good of God to us,
His love like mother-fatherhood?
God knows our goodness is no stimulus.
From this alone--that God is good.

The endless gods that we imagine here
all tumble from our brains of wood,
full of our traits of greed and lust and fear,
while God is only good.

Imagine for a time if God were bad,
or good and bad--like Hollywood;
how much more miserable our lives and sad,
if God were not so good.

I thank my lucky stars in the dark night,
as all on our dear planet should,
that contrary to every terrible fright,
our God is good.
