Whence Kindness
If I am kind, where comes my kindness from?
It does not come from me though steeped in it;
yet I did not invent it, I'm too dumb,
and I and kindness do not always fit.
Much of it's from the way that I was bred,
but when did all my teachers find it too?
More than from me, to it I feel I'm led
when I do find it in myself anew.
Part me, part breeding or infused each time,
my kindness finally comes from the same place;
my natural kindness God sets out to prime
by virtue that His Spirit prompts with grace.
Because my God is tender, caring, kind,
I turn to Him, and there my kindness find.
