Surprised by Christ

When I’m surprised by new temptation’s guise,
I look around for help from someone known,
there’s no disguise when Christ comes by surprise,
reminding me that I am not alone.

He always brings for me sufficient grace
to strengthen my faint efforts to resist
temptation’s charge against my power base
I’ve garnered from our frequent Eucharist.

Why by surprise find I Christ by my side?
He’s promised to be with me when I falter,
Old Satan’s not too strong so long I bide
my sacraments and prayer life by the altar.

Yet I still sin despite Christ’s watchful eyes,
a sinner seeking mercy--no surprise.
