O God, what is a prayer for someone who
is a good friend who somehow needs a prayer,
for those I loved or enemies I slew,
are prayers just thoughts I toss off in the air?
What makes one thought a prayer, and others not?
Is it a better prayer if spoken words?
Is it more powerful if I care a lot?
Do prayers to heaven fly like silent birds?
Does it help if I hitch Your name to theirs?
Is prayer opaque like Your idea of grace?
Are single prayers as good as prayers in pairs?
I’d really like to see the arc they trace.
My questions show how much a mystery
is simple prayer that You await from me.
