God's Best

If we are perfect, don’t we do our best?
And You, Lord, are the only perfect One,
You chose by perfect heaven we’d be blest,
and for that perfect task, You sent Your Son.

For that great gift, the planets held their breath,
a perfect victim for a perfect goal,
You proved Your loving best by awful death,
the earth quaked as You saved my sinful soul.

Your best gift for my sins was to forgive,
the best gift is Yourself while we’re still here--
from common bread and wine here You still live,
Emmanuel in Eucharist so near.

With no more left to give for perfect best,
You lead us by Your grace to perfect rest.
