God's Play

Life's one great play and God directs it all,
He makes us come alive and gives us parts,
we walk on Eden's stage after the Fall,
His lines and law inscribed upon our hearts.
God guides us in our roles but sets us free,
to choose our actions and what words to say,
yet following the script and His decree,
discovered in our prayerful interplay.
So many players careless of their roles,
distracted by applause, pretense and fun,
the scenery, costumes, frolics, poor lost souls,
forgetting our true audience of One.
O God, let me not think the play's the thing,
that keeps me from my conscience and the King.*

(With a bow to Hamlet: “The play’s the thing
wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king.”)
