Avoiding God
I can't avoid myself except to sleep,
but I, O God, can get away from You,
away from other people I can keep,
or I can use them to avoid You too.
You made us both together to be wed,
I sense myself, but I don't sense You there,
I only can pretend You're not instead,
but as for real, I haven't got a prayer.
Avoiding You, I'm spiritually blind,
though I can tune You out because I'm free,
but why be deaf to One Who is so kind,
and blind to One Who sees so much in me?
O God, why should I fear so much to stay
near You, from Whom I cannot get away?
