How should I love a God obsessed with me,
a God I cannot see or hear or touch,
yet Who, I’m told, loves me infinitely,
and, I confess, I don’t love very much?
St. John writes I do not love God unless
all His laws and commandments I obey,
He doesn’t mine, so why does He obsess
about one who would rather play than pray?
I do love Him some as I see His care
for such a low unworthy Joe as I;
He’s always here, and in my need He’s there,
so shouldn’t I be loving in reply?
And so I promise, Lord, to love You too,
though I doubt I’ll be so obsessed with You.
