Why Make Me?

Who made me? First the catechism asked,
God made me, was the answer we were given;
Why did God make me? It continued fast,
to know Him, love Him, serve Him, so gain heaven.

But that reverts the answer to His goal,
and leaves aside His motive for the deed
of caring to create my self and soul
and then to give me everything I need.

What had I done for Him, what would I do
to help His Kingdom come to heaven and earth?
Since He already knew me through and through,
why did He make one of so little worth?

O God of love, You didn't need a shove,
Your infinite love led You to share Your love.
